The Neurobiology of Learning and Memory

Abstract
Two neurobiologic mechanisms of learning and memory have postulated, one of which, long-term potentiation, has heen documented in the vertebrated brain, The other, a model of presynaptic facilitation, has heen studied in the invertebrate nerve
system.
Intensive study of synaptic mechanisms underlying learning and memory has yielded new insights into how the brain processes and stores information Following identification of a central role for NMDA receptors and calcium-sensitive kinases in
initiation
of LTP, attention focused on retrograde signal to the presynaptic neuron and new protein synthesis by regulation of gene expression in maintenance of LTP In addition, evidence for involvement of genomic events in neural plasticity provides a
framework
for understanding how experience and inheritance interbreed spectrum of psychiatric disoders. However further studies are needed in this area.
